What is Workplace Massage?
Also called on-site massage or seated
massage, this is a way to bring massage right to your office. Instead of a
coffee break, employees take a massage break. The massage is done while
the client is clothed, and takes from 10 to 20 minutes, as arranged ahead
of time.
What are the benefits?
More than a low-cost office perk, massage
in the workplace yields positive effects that reach everyone. Studies show
that it:
•
improves
productivity, alertness, and morale
•
reduces
work-related stress, headaches, back strain, and fatigue
•
counters
ills such as musculoskeletal problems and effects of poor ergonomic design
of furniture
•
reduces
unplanned time off from work
Who hires a corporate massage therapist?
Small businesses, large corporations, organizations, and government agencies all have joined the
on-site massage movement. Sometimes the HR Department makes
the arrangements for the whole organization. Sometimes individual managers
bring in this benefit for their departments.
Where is it done?
It is best to have a room
separate from the rest of the workforce for the massage. This way the
massage therapist can set up an environment that gives the recipient a
real break: where there is quiet, perhaps with soft relaxing music. Then, the employee more
fully relaxes, returning to work refreshed.
What about the cost?
As an employee benefit, on-site massage is cheaper
than vacation and child care benefits. There are a variety of ways the
cost is covered. For a one-time (or annual) event such as a health fair,
the employer covers the cost. I
can arrange to have a number of massage therapists cover such an event.
However, to make this a truly valuable employee benefit, it is done on a
regular basis, twice a month or weekly. One option that works nicely is to have the employer
and employee split the cost. We can come up with arrangements that fit best for you and your organization.
